Kakira Distilery can be found in Jinja, Uganda nestling alongside Kakira Sugar Works where cane sugar has been produced by the same family for over 70 years. Gin has long been popular in this country, and building on this heritage we’ve created a range of premium spirits to share with the rest of the world. We believe that it’s time high time to put Africa firmly on the map as a producer of truly exceptional drinks.

Unbeknown to many outside of this region, gin and other spirits have been made here in East Africa for almost 100 years. Our uniquely fertile land and perfect growing climate create the ideal growing environment for the natural elements that make up a perfect drink.
Our secret can remain hidden no longer. Kakira Distillery is now ready to share with you its spirits that come with a truly unique provenance and heritage.

Kakira Vodka uses the same base pure sugar cane alcohol blended with water from Lake Victoria that has undergone a rigorous 8 step filtration and purification process, including UV purification. It’s then chilled to 4 degrees and passed through charcoal filters twice to give you one of the smoothest and purest vodkas you can find.

Kakira Gin 47% is the stronger export brother of our 40% Gin. Again it combines our pure sugar cane alcohol with a unique blend of botanicals steeped in our copper pot still for 16 hours before re-distillation. With the exception of the juniper, all the botanicals are grown on the Kakira Estate. Kakira Gin works perfectly in cocktails or served neat.

Kakira Gin combines our pure sugar cane alcohol with a unique blend of botanicals steeped in our copper pot still for 16 hours before re-distillation. With the exception of the juniper, all the botanicals are grown on the Kakira Estate, including ginger, lemongrass, coriander, black pepper, bitter orange peel and cardamon. Kakira Gin works perfectly in cocktails or served neat.

Kakira Silver Rum is pot distilled in single batches and aged for a minimum of 30 months utilizing a solera aging system. The rum is first aged in single-use American Bourbon barrels before being transferred into Spanish Sherry casks. After completing the aging process, the silver rum is carbon filtered to remove the colour before bottling.

Kakira Gold Rum is distilled in a similar manner to our Silver Rum, but is aged for a minimum of 3 years and includes a higher percentage of Spanish Sherry aged rum, and the addition of rum that’s further aged in 500 liter Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks. Kakira Gold Rum is then lightly filtered using only large micron particulate filtration to preserve its colour and flavor.

Fermentation brings us the alcohol. We entered a range of our spirits into the widely acclaimed European Spirits Championships in May 2022. In a blind testing competition, our spirits delivered no less than four medals including two golds. A truly remarkable result for a new entrant from a very different corner of the world.
